Sun Ra - Celestial Love (1983)

Celestial Love presents the Arkestra playing a really attractive set of Sun Ra compositions and jazz standards.  There are excellent performances from John Gilmore, June Tyson and Sun Ra, and also from trumpeter Walter Miller.  All the pieces are good, some are outstanding: 'Interstellarism' (a retitled 'Intestellar Low Ways'), 'Blue Intensity', which has superb blues choruses from John Gilmore and Sun Ra, 'Smile', and avery interesting writing on compositions titled simply 'Nameless One #2' and 'Nameless One #3'.  This LP is strongly recommended.

375. [280] Sun Ra and his Outer Space Arkestra

Saturn Gemini 19842, also numbered Saturn C/D1984SG-9, was released in 1983 with the title Celestial Love -- matrix numbers Sun Ra 1984C and 1984D.  It is culled from the same recording sessions as the albums A Fireside Chat With Lucifer and Nuclear War.  In addition, a 12" 33-RPM single (Y RA 1) was issued in Britain in 1982; a second was slated for release under the title Rays from the Outer Tomorrow but it never appeared.

Personnel were not credited on any of these releases, except for vocals by "Mr. Re" and June Tyson on the single.  Vincent Chancey identified himself, Miller, Gilmore, Allen, Jacson, and Thompson in an interview on the WKCR Sun Ra Festival... Michael Shore says that Burnett, Samarai, and Atakatune were regulars with the Arkestra in 1982; Samarai confirms his presence.

  2. Thank you yotte, paul w. for the upgrade! - all the missing pieces are slowly falling into place.. Still missing: the sessions from 1972-73 rejected by Impulse: "Across The Border Of Time" (Saturn LP 576), "Flight To Mars" (547) and "Tone Poem" (672). According to the notes in Evidence CD "Pathways To Unknown Worlds & Friendly Love" they were in the same batch as "Friendly Love".

  3. Don't know why my first comment didn't make it through, but I merely said that I'd been looking for a lossless rip of this for a very long time, and am very grateful for it.

  6. I made a commitment on the Live in Egypt, but I bet that'll fetch in the $300+ range. The sky’s the limit on eBay you know. It’s best to step lightly. I just like the way that issue mirror’s the place and subject of the music. Hope whoever gets it treasures it.

  7. Those ebay posts really break my heart! And so many of them unplayed... I noticed another offering of the DIW 7" collection 'omnibus imagiable...' for $229+shipping. Ouch!

Thanks Reza for pointing these out.

  8. I hear ya yotte. On the one hand, I'm glad that people appreciate Sun Ra's work to that extent. What with most of the Saturn's being 'hand-made' as far as the labels and covers are concerned, for folks like me they really have this sort of aura about them. While the Arkesta members usually wouldn't know who would end up with a particular copy, you felt as if like they were made just for you and it made you feel more connected with the band. I used to speculate on which band member drew a given cover. On the flip side, sadly, they are small runs, many with one of a kind covers, the very things that collectors salivate over. It really is unfortunate because you'd like everyone who is interested to experience them. But take heart; your good works here do more to spread the music around than eBay ever could. In the final analysis, that’s what Sonny was all about anyway. I’d like to think Marshal had boxes of El Saturns stowed away somewhere and that HE was the one reaping to much deserved rewards, but I guess we know the world doesn’t work that way.
