Sun Ra Tribute WKCR-FM May 2010

In response to a remark I made in a previous post, I was recently asked about Charles Blass, former program director at WKCR-FM (currently on sabbatical) and if it is possible to hear some of his Sun Ra radio broadcasts.  To my knowledge, none of WKCR's shows are archived.  Fortunately, last spring I made an effort to record the Sun Ra Arrival Day celebration.  In celebration of the anniversary of Sun Ra's arrival on planet earth, WKCR-FM broadcast 9 hours (in two parts) of Sun Ra's music on May 21st and 22nd, 2010. Unfortunately, I missed the first 4 hour segment but managed to record the stream for the 2nd part.

I quickly realized that trying to manage a 5 hour track on an iPod isn't much fun so I broke down the show into 5 segments of approximately 1 hour each. I hope you enjoy this show as much as I have and if anyone was able to capture the first segment, please share!

I originally posted this on the fantastic blog Pathway to Unknown Worlds on May 25, 2010 which happened to be Marshall Allen's birthday.  I had planned on saving this post for Adventure-Equation until May 2011 but I thought if one person was interested in hearing this now, then perhaps others would be too.  I love the picture below of Marshall Allen so much that I just couldn't bear to remove it (despite the fact that it's nowhere close to his birthday right now).

Happy (belated) Birthday, Maestro Allen!

  1. The last time I saw the Arkesta was in Durham, NC a couple of years ago on a double bill with the Minus big band. The Arkestra had the second part of the evening and while they were setting up, I was amazed at how well Marshall was moving around for a guy in his eighties. If he needed to make an adjustment to a piece of equipment on the floor, he’d just do a deep knee bend, fix what needed to be fixed, and stand back without needing any help, not even using a solid object to brace himself. When I saw him later I said ‘Marshall Allen – when you gonna get old man?” He looked at me and asked “What’s that?” I shook my head and said “I guess it’s nothing you need to worry about.” What’s he going to be this May, 87 earth years old? On his way to infinity I suppose.

  3. Thx for sharing, yotte.

Most likely this was originally broadcast on WKCR on 2006-05-22. Parts of a lossless Pre-Fm version were seeded on www.dimeadozen.org some times ago:

cf. old Dime torrent # 97322 - 2006-05-27: Sun Ra Arrival Day Broadcast-Early Rare 1970-1971 / Mix created by Steve Antonelli for broadcast on the May 22, 2006 Sun Ra Arrival Day Marathon Broadcast / Track 1: 10\14\1971 - Helsinki, Finland; Finnish Radio Broadcast on YLE network / Track 2: 11\18\1971 (or it might be 10\18\1971) - Paradiso Amsterdam, Holland; Radio Broadcast / Track 3: 11\11\1971 - Aula van de T.H., Delft, Netherlands; Radio Broadcast / This mix was played in it's entirety during the remote broadcast portion from the House Of Ra / CDR's from private trades> EAC> Cooledit> Flac> You / CDR's used for this mix are believed to be low generation

A great many of those private recordings of Sun Ra concerts (cf. http://homepage.uab.edu/moudry/tapeintr.htm & http://homepage.uab.edu/moudry/discintr.htm)& liberated bootlegs were chiefly shared on Dime (and STG, The Trader's Den, & Lossless Legs, too) during the last years; everything based on lossless sources. Maybe you should create a separate subtopic if you wanna share the stuff on Adventure-Equation blog.

  4. Thanks for the torrent info, antheraea. Currently, I don't use bittorrent so those Dime and LLegs shows that you mention aren't available to me.
Because of that, Solar Flares is the blog's answer to sharing those shows as well as Sun Ra related music. A handful of kind readers have already offered a number of these bootlegs you mention. It's been a wonderful resource for me and I suspect for others.
I've wondered about cataloging the offerings there somehow but haven't landed on a solution - maybe a separate link to the side, kinda like a subtopic!
BTW, the 5 hour show in this post was streamed live in May of last year. It may include some of the same music from the 2006 show but is not the same broadcast. I don't have the 2006 show but would love to hear it. Maybe someone will share it with us.
