Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise Tour: 'Enlightenment' (2011) video

From what I can gather, the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise Tour is/was a collective made up of members of various Athens, GA rock bands.  I can't believe how great this version of "Enlightenment" is.  One guy plays the saw, for cryin' out loud!

  1. I think the guy playing the saw is Julian Koster. He used to play with Neutral Milk Hotel and appears in their most popular album, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (get it if you haven't heard it, it really is a great album).
By the way, congratulations on your blog. Thanks to it, I have been able to build a significant Ra collection in great sound quality.
    Thanks to all involved.

  3. yotte,

continued thanks for this great blog documenting one of the great interstellar musicians. I'm down with any band that includes both tuba and saw.

  4. The only way for this music to live is to play it- great stuff! Thank you!

  5. I agree, drizzz. As time keeps marching on, the Arkestra will have less an active part in keeping this music alive. I'm thrilled to see other bands try their hand at some of the classics and help breathe new life into them. If only the old folks were moved by this music, then the end of time would be far too close.

In case you've missed them, I've posted some other cover tunes:

  6. :-) i'm gonna say that they seemed to start off a little slower :-) than i thought it should be, but they get major props for the hand claps at the end and for getting the audience to join in on that!!! and the tuba! and the musical saw! this is a great tune to pick to cover - and it is not the usual 'sitp'.

    I-)
