Val Wilmer, whose photographs have appeared in several Sun Ra releases, interviewed John Gilmore for the July 1985 issue of The Wire. Some time later, the Hinds brothers printed and bound it for their Sun Ra Research project.
Thanks for posting this yotte! I remember reading a reprint of this interview back in the day. The British version seems to have been cleaned up a bit. The Coltrane quote as I remember it went; “John Gilmore! John Gilmore, you motha f*cker, you got it! You got it! You got the concept!” Then reason I remember is I was in a band that would rehearse every week or so and when someone came up with an interesting idea, we’d substitute their name in that quote.
Can’t say for certain, but I imagine Coltrane meant that what Gilmore was doing was a concept of improvisation that Coltrane was interested in and wanted to explore further. The article doesn’t provide an exact date, but I’d guess it was circa 1962-63
