I've heard more than a few mixes of Sun Ra's music and this one seems
head and shoulders above many. I don't know anything about 'When'
or this release but it's surely a plunderifically joyous listen.
UPDATE!! Thanks to Lucky for providing some info about When. It is a project/band of musician, Lars Pedersen, of Norway. Here is a Wiki page with some additional information.
Lars Pedersen (b. 1961, Oslo Norway) his father, Tore Pedersen, was a Norwegian musical composer. At an early age, the younger Pedersen performed with his four older sisters and old brother; they were often compared to the Jackson 5 and The Partridge Family, popular bands of the time. Being in the spotlight at a young age, Pedersen met Chuck Berry and other stars.
In the late 1970s Pedersen played in Hærverk, one of the first Norwegian punk bands, and later – as the 80's arrived – went on to form the band The Last James. The Last James explored The Beatles/Beach Boys sound, releasing three albums, The Last James, Grape, and Kindergarten. During the 1980s and early 90's, Pedersen was also a member of the experimental/new wave group Holy Toy, together with Andrej D. Nebb.

Hey Yotte . . . now this is interesting. I am guessing this is something like Panthalassa by Laswell? Would you say these are actual snippets of Sun Ra or do you think that they are covers, so to speak? I am still too much of a Raneophite

Bill Laswell is so amazing. Panthalassa, Praxis, Material, all of those Black Ark recordings... wonderful, wonderful stuff.

ReplyDeleteOh, I see what's happening now...this is stuff compiled and composed by the "When Band." That explains the superb quality of the "Homage Series Vol 1." What we're listening to is a long Sun Ra composition as heard thru the ears of "When." I think our favorite Saturnian would approve and say : "They've landed!"

Also the "Imperial News" stuff is a very nice arabesque, "Pre-Galactic Man Returns", "Time Crime Trials...", etc. What astonishes me about all of this is that When is a Norwegian band. There's a worldwide Sun Ra culture out there in Switzerland, Africa, Norway, Egypt, Europe, America, Asia, etc. Japanese school children play his tunes in school bands, etc. It's everywhere.
ReplyDeleteThere's a thing called the Kardashev Scale. It measures how advanced a civilization is by measuring its energy consumption. Without going into too much detail, the scale is from 0 to 7. Zero being the lowest level of the scale which is where we are now. A Type 1 civilization is a Planetary Civilization that controls the energy of an entire planet. To achieve that end a civilization has to overcome certain things, war, poverty, internecine political conflict, etc. Estimates are that we're at about .073 of the Scale. Physicists like Michio Kaku think that in the next 200 years we might make it to a Type 1 civilization if we can get thru the stuff now on our plate. When I look at the breath and depth of our favorite Saturnian's worldwide cult I think, now and then, "we may have a chance of getting there." One of the things I've learned is this : that whatever the future is going to be we'll hear about it first from musicians; not poets, not physicists, not politicians but musicians. As Ra says : "The music is listening now like never
before ("There's Change In The Air - The Antique Blacks)."
So whatever is going to happen will be seen first inside the worldwide Sun Ra community. I'm not kidding, however crazy this stuff sounds I actually believe this shit - as a consequence of hard won experience - not theory and not idealism. "The Music Is Listening!"
