Ha! Pertty groovy animation, quite trippy, you have to wonder what type of pharmaceuticals these guys were on.
ReplyDeleteToday I loaded over 70 Sun Ra albums onto my ipod along with nearly 100 John Zorn albums and 60 odd Frank Zappa Albums and put the lot on random play. What a fucken magnificant musical rollercoaster ride it has been today and for many days to come. Should have done this ages ago.
That DOES sound pretty great, Uncle Roddus!
ReplyDeleteI'd play Name That Tune with you on the Ra and Zappa but you'd kill me on John Zorn... I have a hand full or two of his albums but haven't studied him like I have the others.
Enjoy Sheikin' Yerbouti for the next two weeks on that Tzadikologically Powered Potato Headed Cosmo Space Arf-estra Muffin Coaster!
Hahaha, Good one dude.
ReplyDeleteThing is that much of the Sun Ra stuff I have as digital and have not had a chance to really study it, so loading onto ipod, as I use it every day while working, will give me a chance to get to know it better. The majority of my Zorn collection is almost all of the Masada stuff, both Books one and two, and it is just stunning, still building on the rest of his catalogue. I have been listning to Zappa for over 25 years, though not so much latley, bout time i revisited him again. These three collossal composers have quite a bit in common musically and are three of the most important atrists of the past 60 years and I can;t think of any others who come close in the with and breth of the scope of the musics they produced.
scuse my spelling.
ReplyDeleteOh and speaking of Zappa, I sold my vinyl collection about 15 years ago at a market. I had plenty of Zappa in that collection and all of the Mothers stuff from the late 60s as well as the Lumpy Gravy and Uncle Meat albums. This bloke was browsing through my collection when he found the Lumpy Gravey album, pulls it out of the box turns it over to the back cover and back to the front and says "wow I haven't seen this album for years", His lady friend looks over at it and responds "you won't be playing that at my place". Ans so he brought it.
ReplyDeleteHA!!! Great story! Smart man...
ReplyDeleteI started listening to Zappa in the late '70s and got serious about finding more shortly thereafter. His was the first music that taught me that if I don't like what I'm hearing on my first listen, then I'd better start playing it all the time because there's probably something awesome about it that I just can't hear yet. That has proven true too many times to count - many of my favorite albums were incomprehensible to me when I first bought them.
I actually took to Zappa and firstly the Mothers instantly and have enjoyed almost all his music from first listen. I guess if it wasn't for Zappa though I might not be in a position to appreciate Sun Ra as I now do.
ReplyDeleteInteresting your comment about not liking music on first listen...
I don't nornally work quite like that, although many albums that have started out as pretty average on first listens have become classics for me over repeated listens.
One in particular, though, fits your description, in that when I first heard it I thought Rock music had died and gone to Hell. I was intregued though and gave it further attention as you said and that album is now an old favorite. I reviewd it on my blog earlier this year.
